| | Date: | Sat 14 Jun 2008 10:43:51 PM EDT | | Subject: | Of traits and characteristics | | | A while back I heard people criticing a group because they said it needed to "stand for something" and have "positive attributes". Although nonsense in that case, it make sense in this case as goblins need to have som sort of characteristics and personality. Hopefully not like elves (they are perfect in every way), but more like dwarfes and haflings (two groups that seem more round). So here are some possibilities.
1)Horde vs Alliance. Goblins and Dwarves Koblods and Haflings Knolls and Gnomes Hobgoblins and Humans Orcs and Elves Orges and Orcs Basically, each one on the right and left side are the equilalent for each side- hobgoblins build most of the cities goblinoids live in, koblods are major traders and goblins are builders (those dungeons didn't build themselves you know). Of course they aren't exact parrallels- koblods are also obcessed with magic, goblins focus more on invention, orcs are less touchy feely and more bad ass (I do not fear waterfalls! Cow a bunga!), hobgoblins are more ordered (well come to Singapore- gum is illegal. And if we catch you with drugs... you get to meet Mr Ax) and Knolls are a bit more devious.
2) Magic the Gathering. "when you are small you learn to rely on you advantage- sheer numbers" Goblins have repeatedly been conquered and enslaved- and they don't like it. Goblin society is very collectivist and fanatical- goblins are more tan willing to give away their lives if it gets them victory. Of course, they aren'tstupid- they have a long history of tactics and planning to draw upon.
3) Competant bad guys. They are small and numerous... crossbows and pikes for the win! Who cares if they have opponents twice their size? If you outnumber them five to one, you can put out enough fire power to rule the plains. A goblin empire, supported by levees and tribute...
Any other ideas? | | | Post Reply | Display replies to this message

It may help give people who are on the fence about creating goblin characters the drive to make one, and help people who already play goblins see that there are more of us out there.
...and probably will irritate the elf/dwarf/human lovers out there, which is another perk. | | | Post Reply | Display replies to this message

| | Date: | Sat 15 Mar 2008 09:14:17 AM EDT | | Subject: | The appeal of 'evil goblins' | | | What kind of theme does the DM want to play out with his goblins? Are they intentionally misunderstood creatures, scapegoats of a human society that can only have internal peace while it's attacking an external threat? "Black and white unite... against green!" What if the adventurers succeeded in exterminating that threat?
Or what if this is a one hour game where the aim is to just let your hair down and fight an endless swarm of stock enemies, safe in the knowledge that you'll always triumph because you're god and they're evil, or you know this is just the easy interlude before you gotta tackle the deadly basilisk people of Dakkadaakdadaakkdakk.
The 'evil goblins' in the monster manuals are there becuase they target a specific consumer, DMs who want to play out the second scenario. Maybe they want their goblins irredeemably evil because they honestly believe the world is as black-and-white as all that, and the games are an extension of that belief. Then again, maybe they just want to dispense with all that intellectual crap and have a good old bloodless, brainless, baddiekillathon.
Anyways, if the Goblin Defense Fund really wants to wipe out the stereotypical 'Goblins are evil creatures that...' entries in roleplaying games, IMO they'll have to target not only the companies that churn this stuff out but also the consumers who want it. Good luck.
But by gawd, ain't there a certain dark-side pleasure in casting all these high-minded themes aside and going down into a deep, dark dungeon to kill dozens of faceless, 'evil' goblins?
The plight of dragons compares well to goblins. Imagine if humans were considered irredemably evil or noble and good due to the colour of their skins? | | | Post Reply | Display replies to this message
